Smugsy on Porn: Let's Take it Up a Notch
Being a character on the Kirk Minihane Show was Smugsy’s way of giving back.
She was the show’s candy striper. The ballast. The helper. Minifans were comforted knowing as a cartoon character she was unlikely to kill herself.
Smugsy’s purpose on the show, she quickly realized, was to demonstrate how to co-exist with others less fortunate and raise the level of conversation.
Instead of watching pornography and narrating it for the audience, for instance, Smugsy challenged Minihane to think about the issue using his head.
Why is filming and selling pornography protected speech under the First Amendment when prostitution is illegal?
You can sell the video of the sex but not the sex?
That makes no sense, right?
How about a rant about that?
Smugsy challenged Minihane to broaden his mind and therefore the show’s audience.
They debated whether decriminalizing prostitution would harm women and cause more inequality and oppression – or -- whether it would it level the playing field, eliminate stigma and improve the quality of life for millions of people.
Amnesty International supports the decriminalization of consensual sex work and full and equal protection from exploitation, trafficking and violence for sex workers.
Where should the Minifans stand?
Is Kirk Minihane on the side of the World Health Organization, Human Rights Watch and the Open Society Foundation in support of decriminalization of sex work?
If so he joins ultra-liberal George Soros and the Global Commission on HIV.
Is he okay with that?
Smugsy is a free-market libertarian-type and believes the oldest profession in the book should be deregulated.
Unlike Gloria Steinem and Lena Dunham, Smugsy thinks sex workers should be brought out of the shadows and allowed to collectively bargain for higher wages, safety and benefits.
And she was gratified when Minifans took up the cause in solidarity.
Her role on the Kirk Minihane Show was about tolerance.
With fortitude Smugsy was able to numb herself to the banality of the show and channel her inner Jane Goodall.
She learned bro-show body language and how to hear and interpret the longing in Minihane’s F-bombs and rants.
Smugsy supported Kirk Minihane’s desire to be understood and forgiven and famous despite his narcissism, bursts of insanity and lack of filter because of her faith.
And her tenderness, effort and patience with the show’s dim-witted personalities and overwrought shock-jock host was magnanimous and powerful.
Smugsy brought people together — in fact Hillary Clinton was so moved by Smugsy’s charitable performance she agreed to suffer through an appearance on the Howard Stern Show.
Being a part of the Kirk Minihane Show was never about the money or the Twitter followers for Smugsy.
Barstool Sports threw tons of cash at her hoping – begging-- that she could freshen up Minihane’s show but she didn’t need the money. Ever since Erika Giardini wore the “Madawaska” to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner the Smugsy Smart and Sassy line went bonkers and remains a huge commercial success.
In the mix of personalities on the show Smugsy compensates for the brokenness of the others.
As they process the minutiae of their unfulfilled lives (“I have never tried Indian food”), like the faithful servant in the Gospel of Luke, Smugsy believes to whom much is given, much is required
And so she soldiered on.
